Artist Statement of troy Hubbs

For as long as I can remember, I have been visually studying life and the world around me.  Looking for a template.  Something to grasp and hold onto.  Something to make sense of the world and my place in it.  Painting has given me that template.  Taking what is outside inward and giving it back through my eyes, gives me a place and peace of mind.

I am normally inspired by the Old Master Painters; however, a few years ago I was commissioned to create some paintings—more abstract/not image based—color palettes.  I enjoyed breaking away from representational art for a while, and have explored abstracts further in this body of work.   I can see influences from abstract expressionist painters Mark Rothko and Willem De Kooning in some of the pieces. The technique used is a combination of palette knife and brush work, painted wet on wet, Alla Prima style in oils.
