Citizens Police Academy

Canton Police Department’s Citizens Police Academy is an eight-week program intended for individuals who are interested in acquiring insight and knowledge on how the police department works to serve the Canton community. This academy also includes two weeks dedicated to the Fire Department.

Application Requirements:
Provided are a list of application requirements:
- Canton resident
- Age 21 or over
- No felony convictions and no misdemeanor convictions within the past 3 years
- Applicants are subject to a background check

Notification of Acceptance:
CLASS SIZE IS LIMITED. Participants will be randomly selected. All applicants will be notified by mail as to whether they have been accepted or not.
Mission of the Academy:
Individuals attending the academy will be educated on policies and operational procedures of the department through presentations, demonstrations and hands-on activities. They will increase their personal knowledge on law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system, as well as their understanding of the training and education required for police officers to effectively handle the daily challenges of police work. The overall intent of the academy is to develop positive relationships between citizens and police officers, enhancing cooperation, understanding and general good will.
