[ARCHIVED] 5th Annual Cardboard Boat Race To Be Held At Summit On The Park Aquatic Center

Area families are invited to participate in the Summit on the Park’s Fifth Annual Cardboard Boat Race, scheduled to take place on Thursday, August 30, 2018, starting at 6 p.m. at the Summit on the Park Aquatic Center, located at 46000 Summit Parkway, Canton, MI  48188.

Participants are highly encouraged to use creative teamwork to build a boat entirely out of cardboard, duct tape, and paint prior to the event.  Finished cardboard boats must be no larger than 5 1/2 feet wide by 10 feet long.

Cardboard boats can either be built at home or during a special boat building session in the Summit on the Park’s gymnasium on Wednesday, August 29, from 5-7 p.m.  Participants in the on-site boat building session will get access to cardboard and 3 rolls of Duct tape for a $12 materials fee and will be able to have their boats displayed at the Summit until race time.

Paddles will be provided for participants and boats can be raced by a youth crew comprised of one or two individuals.  Each boat will be timed individually. Awards will be given out for Most Creative and Fastest Boat, as well as the Titanic Award.

"We’re looking forward to another exciting competition at this year’s Cardboard Boat Race," said Brad Chiasson, Aquatic Specialist. "It’s great to see families working together and the competition takes it to a whole other level of fun. Plus, the unique engineering and creative designs make it a great event to just watch.”

Entry fees for this event are: $10 for Summit members, $15 for Canton Residents, and $20 for Non-Residents.  The Summit Boat Dock will open at 5:30 p.m., with races scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.

The Summit’s Aquatic Center features a 25-yard lap pool, zero-depth leisure pool, lazy river, waterslide, small sprayscape and hot tub. The Summit Swim School also offers a full complement of swim lessons for all ages and abilities. Take advantage of our daily swim lessons for: Parent/Child, Preschool, Youth and Adult.
