The Spotlight Players will present the Broadway Classic, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill in Canton, MI on March 29-31 and April 5-7, 2019.
This popular show, which tells the story of Joseph’s “coat of many colors” from the Bible’s Book of Genesis, will be performed on the Main Stage at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, located at 50400 Cherry Hill Road, Canton, MI 48187.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was first performed as a 15-minute skit in 1968. Notable highlights throughout its history include David Cassidy playing the role of Joseph between 1983 and 1984 and Donny Osmond starring in a 1999 Broadway version which went direct to video. Joseph has continued to entertain audiences with many other productions which continue through today. Over 20,000 schools and amateur theatre groups have also performed this musical.
One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a reimagining of the Biblical story of Joseph, his father Jacob, eleven brothers and the coat of many colors. Told entirely through song with the help of a main character, the Narrator, the musical follows preferred son, Joseph. After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph ingratiates himself with Egyptian noble Potiphar, but ends up in jail after refusing the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. While imprisoned, Joseph discovers his ability to interpret dreams, and soon finds himself in front of the mighty but troubled, Elvis-inspired, Pharaoh. Joseph’s solution to Egypt’s famine elevates him to Pharaoh’s right-hand man and reunites him with his family.
Audiences will enjoy catchy songs from a variety of music styles, such as: “Any Dream Will Do”, the Western style “One More Angel in Heaven”, “Close Every Door”, the Rock-n-Roll Elvis-inspired “Song of the King”, the Calypso style “Benjamin Calypso” and of course “Go, Go, Go Joseph”.
