The B.L.O.C.K. Youth and Teen Center will host a special youth-led walk against violence and hate in partnership with Canton Public Safety on Saturday, April 27, 2019, in Canton’s Heritage Park. This free community event, entitled “Together Towards Tomorrow,” will be held from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. starting at the Heritage Park Amphitheater, which can be found adjacent to the Canton Administration Building located at 1150 S. Canton Center Road, Canton, MI 48188.
This special walk is intended to be a peaceful demonstration of participants’ commitment to a community and a future with peace and tolerance, while bringing awareness to the issues area youth are passionate about, including: bullying, gun violence, mental health, and more.
“The idea to hold Together Towards Tomorrow came from several BLOCK participants ages 11-17, who are passionate about working together to address important issues facing teens today,” stated BLOCK Coordinator Laura Mortier. “These students are hoping area youth and their families turn out to support these universal messages of peace and tolerance to see firsthand how making a difference together today can lead to a better tomorrow.”
This free event will include a presentation by motivational guest speaker Harry Weaver, a principal consultant at Intentional Diversity Solutions, who believes that intolerance and bullying can be replaced by creating a more inclusive environment with a consistent message of respect. This outdoor event will also feature music and poster-making for the walk around Heritage Park’s large pond. Participants are encouraged to bring their own signs or use the provided materials to create signs to help spread their own positive messages.
In addition, an onsite event T-Shirt sale will be held with proceeds benefiting the Youth Advisory Council Endowment Fund, which grants money to other youth organizations in the Canton community that make a difference.
Parents are also welcome and encouraged to accompany their children. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Summit on the Park’s gymnasium, located at 46000 Summit Parkway in Canton.
