The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is the recent recipient of $187,512.26 from the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant (SVOG) program, which provides emergency assistance for eligible cultural institutions and organizations affected by COVID-19.
The grant was awarded by the U.S. Small Business Administration to enable recipients to recoup expenses and recover from the period when they were unable to earn revenue. Funds may be used to repay eligible expenses in 2020 and 2021, including but not limited to payroll, ticket refunds, utilities, maintenance, and repairs.
“The Village Theater at Cherry Hill is beyond thrilled to receive this generous grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration, which will help mitigate the impact of lost revenue and additional operational costs when we were forced to close our doors for over 12 months due to the pandemic,” stated Ben Frick, Canton Performing Arts Coordinator. “The SVOG program allows us to pick up where we left off when we closed and will also be used to invest in future performances and concerts.”
The Village Theater at Cherry Hill staff have allocated the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant funds to cover wages, utilities, and contracted services to help bring back audience members into the venue. Funds from the grant will also be used to present several new performances, including some holiday shows, including: “Christmas with the Celts” on Wednesday, December 8, at 7 p.m. and the Detroit Circus will return with their popular New Year’s Eve show on Friday, December 31, at 7 p.m.
The SVOG program was established by the Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act and the American Rescue Plan Act. The program has administered more than $16 billion in grants to shuttered venues across the United States through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)’s Office of Disaster Assistance. To date, the funding has been awarded to thousands of organizations throughout the country.
