October 9, 2015, Canton, MI – Yesterday, Canton Fire Chief Joshua Meier and Deputy Police Chief Debra Newsome participated in the Third Annual Chiefs Cooking for Kids Fundraiser, a charitable recognition event hosted by the Board of Directors of the Youth Connection, Inc. Meier and Newsome were among 20 metro-Detroit area police and fire chiefs competing for the best recipes—with all proceeds raised going to the Youth Connection, a non-profit organization committed to providing high-quality programs, advocacy and support services for youth to achieve a brighter future.
Participating chiefs submitted recipes in the categories of appetizer, entrée, and dessert. One recipe per chief was selected and prepared for taste-testing and voting during the event held last night at the Max Fisher Theater in Detroit.
Fire Chief Meier received the Max Fisher Chef’s Choice award for his entrée recipe of “Captain Mearnic’s Mahi Mahi Fish Tacos.” The Chef’s Choice award is given to the dish chosen by the chef at the Max Fisher Theater, and will be featured on the Max Fisher Music Theater Catering Menu for the remainder of the year.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to take part in this enjoyable and worthwhile fundraising event. The competition was fierce, with many great recipes being prepared last night,” said Meier. “I feel honored to have won the Chef’s Choice award, and I look forward to representing Canton again next year,” Meier adds.
Additional event awards went to Detroit Police Department Chief James Craig, Inkster Fire Department Chief John Adams, and Wayne State University Police Chief Anthony Holt, with the coveted Chief Chef award going to Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon for his Chicken and Mashed Potato Casserole dish.
