Woman stressed during holiday season

Stress, Depression and the Holidays

Tips for Coping

Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression.

The holiday season often brings stress and depression. You may also feel sad or anxious because your holiday plans may look different during the COVID-19 pandemic. With some practical tips, you can minimize the stress that accompanies the holidays. You may even end up enjoying the holidays more than you thought you would.

When stress is at its peak, it's hard to stop and regroup. Try to prevent stress and depression in the first place, especially if the holidays have taken an emotional toll on you in the past.

  1. Acknowledge Your Feelings: If someone close to you has recently died or you can't be with loved ones for other reasons, realize that it's normal to feel sadness and grief. It's OK to take time to express your feelings.
  2. Reach out: If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events or communities. They can offer support and companionship.
  3. Be realistic: The holidays don't have to be perfect or just like last year. As families change and grow, traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose a few to hold on to and be open to creating new ones.

Try these alternatives: Donate to a charity in someone's name, give homemade gifts or start a family gift exchange.

Learn to recognize your holiday triggers, such as financial pressures or personal demands, so you can combat them before they lead to a meltdown. With a little planning and some positive thinking, you can find peace and joy during the holidays.

Club 55+ Candid Conversations

CANDID Conversations with Canton Club 55+

Each month Canton Club 55+ will feature an in depth interview with a different member!  Would you like to be featured?  Please call Canton Club 55+ at 734/394-5485 or email us at jgalazka@canton-mi.org

This month we are featuring the fascinating Thomas Wroblewski!  Thomas, who likes to go by Tom, was born and raised on the west side of Detroit, Michigan. His heritage is of Polish descent where the customs are passed down from generation to generation and are enjoyed and revered; especially the food, music and dancing.  Tom continues to share his heritage with his children and grandchildren today.

Tom has worked in many different churches with focus on youth programming. This led to him working with young adults on their Mission Programs, which took these young adults throughout the US and Spain. Tom sure has led an interesting life!

Tom is now active with the Canton Community and Club 55+! Where could you find Tom at Club 55+?  He is part of The Pioneers Group, the Striders Group and is learning about the many different groups we have at the club!

Some Fun Facts about Tom:

  • Tom has a dry sense of humor-but is hilariously funny
  • He is currently writing a book
  • When Tom was younger, he was a member of a Polish Dance Group, which performed all over Wayne County! How Fun!

Thank you, Tom, for sharing your life with us and we are so grateful to have you as a member of Canton Club 55+.
