Caregiver Support Group at Canton Club 55+

Caregiver Support Group Now Available

A caregiver support group is one place you can go to find people who understand what you’re going through. You are not alone in caring for a loved one. Canton Club 55+’s free monthly caregiver support group, sponsored in part by ProMedica, meets the second Thursday of each month from 2-3 p.m. in the Summit on the Park Arts I Room. There are many benefits to joining a support group for caregivers that can help you understand just how important it is to reach out and connect with others.

Discuss your feelings in a safe environment. Since most of the people in the group can relate to your issues, caregiver support groups give you a safe environment in which you can discuss your feelings.

Form new friendships with people in similar situations. Many people report making friends with those they meet in the caregiver support groups.

Gain worthwhile caregiver resources. Your fellow family caregivers will be able to tell you about what resources they prefer and direct you in accessing these resources. This is particularly helpful as you can get advice from people who are going through much of the same experience you are.

Learn New Caregiving Strategies
Family caregivers are constantly needing to find ways to change how they do things. Whether you’re having difficulty figuring out how to keep the house clean or you need to identify a way to help your senior loved one manage personal hygiene, you can be confident another caregiver has been in your shoes before. During support group meetings, it’s common to encounter both brand-new and experienced caregivers with great ideas to share that can make your daily routine easier to manage.

Candid Conversations with Canton Club 55+

CANDID Conversations with Canton Club 55+

This month's conversation is with Joan Morrison-McNally, who is one of our volunteers that makes Canton Club 55+ a great place to visit!  Joan started her community volunteer service in 1972 with her mother at the Garden City Hospital Gift Shop, where she accumulated almost 6,000 volunteer hours at the hospital. Joan graduated with a Master of Human Resource Management Degree from Central Michigan University.

For the past 50 years, Joan has been an active member of Faith Baptist Church, where she has also participated in the music program as a choir member and soloist as well as planned many out-of-state trips for the church congregation. During the past 25 years as a canton resident, she served on two property association boards as an officer. Joan and her husband Patrick have enjoyed serving as ushers at The Village Theater in Canton. Upon her retirement from work, she took training to volunteer in the bereavement program as a grief meeting coordinator at Angela Hospice located in Livonia.  Joan has worked for a total of 53 years, including her employment at Burroughs/Unisys Corporation in Plymouth for 34 years as an Accounting Supervisor and Human Resource Specialist. While employed at Unisys she served on the Plymouth Community United Way Board and the Plymouth Historical Museum Board as a representative of Unisys. Her last 14 years of employment were at Virginia Tile Company as a Human Resource and Payroll Manager.

After attending many Canton Club 55+ events and trips with her husband, she decided to apply for the volunteer office position where she now spends Tuesday mornings. Her love of people and the opportunity to serve others while volunteering at Club 55+ has been very inspiring for her. Joan believes that it is wonderful to see that we have a place where our seniors can gather once again to play cards, games and just enjoy the fellowship of other senior adults.

Thank you, Joan, for sharing your life with us and we are so grateful to have you as a member and volunteer of Canton Club 55+.

We are also open to the topics you, as caregivers, would like to discuss. These workshops will occur the
