Pioneer Social Club Celebrates Milestone

The Pioneer Club will celebrate its 50th Anniversary on October 14, at 12 noon. All former Presidents will be honored at this club event.

The Pioneer Club meets weekly at the Summit on the Park in the Maple/Oak room every Friday at noon. The new season kicked off last month on September 16.

Any adult aged 55 and older is invited to join this fun-loving group which begins with lunch followed by a fun activity. The purpose of the Pioneer Club is to develop friendships and eliminate stress and loneliness. Canton residents and nonresidents are welcome to join.

A little history: The 1st Pioneer Club meeting was held in 1972 in a Canton Township facility located on Geddes Road. In March of 1996, the Pioneer Club began hosting meetings at the Summit on the Park.

Dues are just $10 a year plus $1 at each attended meeting to cover the cost of desserts and beverages. Luncheons follow a rotation starting with a brown bag lunch on the 1st Friday of the month, followed by a catered meal, then a Pot Luck.

This season's officers are: Joann Hewitt (President), Pat Jutras (Vice President), Robert Manuel (Treasurer), & Nancy G. Anderson (Secretary). Hope to meet you soon. Come join the fun!

Candid Conversations with Canton Club 55+

CANDID Conversations with Canton Club 55+

Each month Canton Club 55+ features a different captivating member/volunteer and/or staff person in our Candid Conversations! If you’d like to be profiled in an upcoming edition, please call 734/394-5485 or email us at rachel.dean@cantonmi.gov.

This month we are spotlighting Durwood Coffey, who teaches Oil and Acrylics right here at the Summit on the Park.

Following in the footsteps of such childhood heroes as Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth and Norman Rockwell, Durwood Coffey learned the art of illustration and practiced this visual skill for over 30 years in the corporate world.

His clients came from across the country representing such firms as: Detroit Edison, Anheuser-Busch, General Motors, SeaWorld, Capital Cities and Marvel Comics. It was in this commercial visual training ground where projects ranging from spot illustration in periodicals to the creation of major series of paintings for corporate boardrooms were made. This business environment is where Durwood kept his artistic vision and skills honed for a day in which he could unleash them upon the personal subjects of his choice.

Durwood truly enjoys teaching painting classes at the Summit on the Park. He strives to make individuals who are taking his class feel good about what they are doing. Durwood doesn’t just teach painting techniques, he teaches the process that he goes through to achieve his art. When his students leave class, they all feel more confident about their own artistic abilities and their paintings reflect this by-product.

To learn more about Durwood’s class here at the Summit, check out the Discover magazine or visit www.cantonfun.org/476.
