Tips for Coping with Holiday LonelinessThe holiday season is generally thought of as a time of joy and love but for many people, it’s a time of loneliness. Their loneliness may come from loss of loved ones, separation by physical distance or through relationship breakups. Whatever the reason, coping with loneliness during the holidays can be difficult especially when others are happy, but take some comfort in knowing you are not alone.
Below are some ways to cope with holiday loneliness:
1. Seek Company: Reach out to friends and family, get connected with people through church or other social organizations or attend a holiday celebration.
2. Share Your Feelings: Be honest about your feelings and share them with family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, your pastor or a therapist.
3. Practice Self-Care: Take care of yourself with sleep, physical activity, proper nutrition, meditation, prayer and engage in activities you enjoy.
4. Have Realistic Expectations: Accept things as they come. Don’t expect someone who isn’t supportive to suddenly be during the holidays. Avoid presumptions.
5. Volunteer: Help others, serve at a soup kitchen or help charitable organizations.
